The ME 880 MARATHON (ME 880), which is highly trusted by Harley-Davidson and other V-Twin custom motorcycle riders and builders, is available in the ME 888 MARATHON ULTRA (ME 888), a product with improved mileage in addition to its superior performance.
The ME 888 has been redesigned in many areas such as compound, profile, tread pattern, and contact surface shape to improve mileage without sacrificing the excellent grip, nimble handling, and wet performance for which the ME 880 was known.
■Compounds
A new compound with excellent abrasion resistance and wear uniformity has been adopted.
・Improvement of abrasion resistance
The new resin and wear resistant polymers provide excellent mileage while maintaining the same grip on wet surfaces.
・Uniformity of wear
METZELER's proprietary compound mixing technology produces a finer, more uniform mix of compound ingredients to produce a compound.This results in a very even wear and minimizes the loss of performance after the tire has been worn down.
■ Profile
The ME 888, like the ME 880, uses a polyester carcass in the bias size (with an additional aramid belt in the belted bias), but with a completely different profile.
The shape from the center to the shoulder of the tire is flatter than that of the ME 880 (Figure 1) to suppress deformation of the tread surface.This reduces the stress on the tire as a whole, resulting in better mileage.
■Tread pattern design
For the ME 888, a part called a compound bridge (Figure 2) is placed between the grooves.This suppresses deformation of the tread surface and performance deterioration during wear and improves mileage.
The angle of the grooves is changed according to the direction of the force applied to the tire from the road surface (Figure 3).
The force applied to the tire from the road surface depends on the bank angle and the direction of rotation of the tire.
By carving grooves at angles that match the bank angle and the direction of rotation of the tire, the stress on the tread surface is reduced, which in turn reduces uneven wear and further improves mileage.
■Ground surface shape
The ME 888 has a 5% shorter and 15% wider ground contact surface than the ME 880.
By shortening the ground contact surface shape, the amount of time that force is applied to the tread surface is shortened, reducing stress on the compound.This further improves the mileage.
The wider ground contact area provides more ground contact for better grip.The powerful torque of the V-Twin engine is fully transferred to the road surface.
■Summary
The ME 888 MARATHON ULTRA is a newly designed tire in terms of compound, profile, tread pattern design, and ground contact surface shape, and has greatly improved mileage without sacrificing the excellent grip, nimble handling, and wet performance for which the ME 880 MARATHON was known.

It is a substitute from Road smart 2.
I thought that Tire itself was soft though it was very easy to set up in the system, but the feeling I ran felt quite a sense of rigidity.
It is good if you can get around 20,000 kilometers in this.

If you want Sports Rydin to be a big twin, this is it.
The OEM Dunlop has a life span of about 15,000?:It doesn't grip as much as I thought it did Plastic.
Given the road conditions in Japan, it's easier to ride on touring if you specialize in Winding performance.
The Compound seems rather soft, with satisfactory Grip and Case stiffness for both Dry and Wet.
Life is around 8000? but I think it's due to our footpeg scraping and riding through the passes, I think we can use it a bit more unless we specialize in Sports Rydin.
